Having A Plan
By Steve Estes©
When thinking about building
a collection, it's important to formulate a plan according to your
budget. Without a plan, it will be difficult to create a well-matched
set.
For instance, placing an MS-64 or
65 grade coin next to a VG example has the effect of making the
VG look worse than it actually is. Mixing a wide range of grades
creates a hodge podge -- this type of set lacks continuity and overall
eye appeal. Further, poorly matched coins inhibit resale value and
-- most important -- viewer pleasure.
For best results, begin a collection
with a solid plan and stick to it with as little deviation as possible.
A well-matched set will be beautiful, have continuity, look its
best and draw anxious buyers when time for resale.
As usual, there are exceptions to
this guideline. Very large and/or expensive sets will be hard to
match closely on a limited budget. In any case, keep this concept
in mind, no matter what your collecting focus.
